Abstract: In the hot cell laboratories at KFA Jiilich the burn up of spherical fuel elements is determined by measuring the Cs 137 activity producedduring irradiation by means of gamma-spectrometry. A large number of these spheres is taken from the AVR regularly and in order to reduce hot-cell time, a special measuring device has been developed to reduce the counting-time for each sphere. The fuel element is placed in the hot cell in a defined position. The measuring equipment consisting of a Ge(Li) detector and the pulse electronics equipment with multichannelanalyser is mounted in the inactive service area. A specially designed collimator is positioned in a penetration in the cell wall to reduce the intensity of the gamma beam. Up to now more than 1800 spheres have been measured. By comparing the results with mass-spectrometric measurements a difference of less than $\pm$5 percent was found.
